I wish to acknowledge and pay respect to the land from which I live on, the Yugambeh region of South East Queensland, and their Elders past, present and emerging.
Katie was born in Bundjalung country, which includes the Northern Rivers of NSW, and my hometown Casino. Through Sport Access Foundation, we are working towards greater representation of First Nations in our SAF community, including representation on our board, an indigenous grant in the NT was trialled in 2018, and indigenous grant for girls in Bundjalung country in 2021. Last year the Casino Fun Run utilised funding from Sport Access Foundation to improve the participation of First Nations community in the Fun Run and appointed Eileen Byers, an Indigenous Marathon Foundation (IMF) graduate and finisher of the New York Marathon as it's ambassador.
During her time as an AIS athlete, Katie was an Ambassador for the inaugural Share A Yarn program. The video below includes highlights for a yarning cirlce with fellow Triathles and Kayakers on Yugambeh land. Katie also talks about the importance of reconciliation to achieve a healthier and healing nation.
